All About Parkwest Medical Center
Welcome
Since admitting its first patient on Dec. 10, 1973, Parkwest has been at the vanguard of medical care in Knoxville, with a primary focus on serving the growing population of West Knox County.
At the forefront
Parkwest opened as a joint venture between physicians and the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). From a staff of 155 employees and 137 physicians in the early 1970s, Parkwest grew to nearly 1,000 employees and more than 400 physicians by the end of the 1980s.
Parkwest became part of the not-for-profit Fort Sanders Health System in 1990. The system evolved into a comprehensive healthcare organization serving a 16-county area of East Tennessee, and became Covenant Health in 1996. Parkwest is one of nearly 30 member organizations of Covenant Health, which includes acute care facilities, outpatient clinics, specialty and home care, and other services.
Largest comprehensive medical center
Today Parkwest is West Knoxville's largest medical center. The campus includes one of the area's first all-digital catheterization laboratories and a comprehensive breast center with a multidisciplinary approach to women's health.
In March 2005 Parkwest opened its six-story Riverstone Tower - part of a $100 million project that comprises 326,000 square feet of new construction, an additional 214 beds, and 45,000 square feet of renovated space.
Patient & family comfort
Parkwest has ushered in a new era of patient and family care. Highlights include:
- A 40-bed Emergency Care Center with greater privacy and personal patient service.
- A 30-bed Critical Care Unit where nurses are available just outside the patient's door. One waiting area for family and friends has leather recliners for sleeping, while another is for sitting.
- Showers, food stations and lockers to make family and friends who stay over more comfortable.
- A decentralized nursing model. Today's nurses closely monitor heart rhythms and other data from computer alcoves close to patients' bedsides.
- A 20-suite Childbirth Center with whirlpool tubs and sleep areas for family members.
- A new GE Signa Excite 3T MRI system - which doubles the strength and speed of previous equipment. It produces images with greater detail and clarity in less time than ever.
- The Boulevard Bistro food court, a dining experience that adds flair to hospital fare. The Bistro features a 24-hour grill, demonstration cooking area, healthy soup and salad bar, and more.
