At the forefront of medical care
Since admitting its first patient on Dec. 10, 1973, Parkwest has been at the vanguard of medical care in Knoxville, with a primary focus on serving the growing population of west Knox County.
Parkwest opened as a joint venture between physicians and Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). From 155 employees and 137 physicians in the early 70s, Parkwest grew to nearly 1,000 employees and more than 400 physicians by the end of the 1980s.
Parkwest became part of the not-for-profit Fort Sanders Health System in 1990. The system became Covenant Health in 1996, and is now one of the nation’s Top 100 integrated health systems, serving a 16-county area of East Tennessee. Covenant Health has nearly 30 member organizations, including acute care facilities, outpatient clinics, specialty and home care, and other services.
Largest comprehensive medical center
Today Parkwest is west Knoxville’s largest medical center. The campus includes one of the area’s first all-digital catheterization laboratories and a comprehensive breast center with a multidisciplinary approach to women’s health. In March 2005 Parkwest opened its six-story Riverstone Tower, part of a $100 million project that comprises 326,000 square feet of new construction, an additional 214 beds, and 45,000 square feet of renovated space. In December 2019 Parkwest finished completion of the new Dogwood Tower, adding two patient floors and surgical suites and support space.
