Congratulations to Jenny Westbrook, PT, DPT, GCS, for achieving certification as a Geriatric Specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists. Westbrook, a senior physical therapist at Parkwest Medical Center, works primarily in the Senior Behavioral Unit. She wanted to advance her clinical practice, and felt that a geriatric certification was the best option. “Working in the Senior Behavioral Unit has been beneficial in helping me prepare for the exam, and as well has allowed me to utilize the skills I have learned with that patient population,” said Westbrook.
The goal of specialty practice certifications is to identify therapists with advanced knowledge and skills in a certain clinical area. Westbrook explained, “my primary focus in becoming a Geriatric Certified Specialist is mainly on falls prevention, strength and endurance training for those with complex medical conditions, and functional mobility for adults with dementia.”
Westbrook is the only inpatient physical therapist at Parkwest who has obtained this certification. Outpatient physical therapist Margaret Keele, at Parkwest Therapy Center, is also a certified geriatric specialist.
